 Announcing Winners of the 2nd edition of "Innovate for Refugees" competition




The second edition of Innovation for Refugees competition was held on Sunday, January 28 at the sports club Vega079 at the King Hussein Business Park. The competition was launched by MIT Entrepreneurship Forum in the Arab World, in collaboration with Zain, to create innovative, long-term technical solutions that address the challenges faced by refugees. 
The selection of the winners came after the round of arbitration by a panel of experts from different disciplines. Each of the five winning teams received a $ 20,000 prize. Akyas from Jordan and Paper Airplanes from the United States USA, Hope on Sand and Pipes from Lebanon, Tech for Food from Iraq and Lebanon and More than one Perspective from Austria.
The MIT Entrepreneurship Forum in the Arab World has announced the opening of the "Innovate for Refugees" competition to all entrepreneurs and refugees from around the world to find innovative, technology-based solutions to alleviate the global refugee crisis. More than 1500 applications were received, of which 20 were selected for the final round, including 6 Jordanian teams.
The winners were selected based on criteria of innovation, impact, scalability, team membership, and financial sustainability. In addition to cash, the winners will receive the opportunity to benefit from mentoring and training by specialized experts to assist them during the various stages of their project implementation.
Commenting on the award ceremony for the "Innovate for Refugees" competition, Zain Jordan CEO Ahmed Hanandah said: "We are delighted to see the continued drive towards innovation when creative young people employ technology innovation for a noble refugee goal and on a global level. We are confident that this competition and the innovations of the winners will contribute to building a better future for many refugees across the region. " "We are proud of the partnership that brings us together with the MIT Forum for Entrepreneurship in the Arab World and our partner partners through this competition, which has succeeded in finding real solutions to some of the most pressing problems facing refugees," he added.
The MIT Entrepreneurship Forum launched the "Innovate for Refugees" competition - the first edition - in June 2016 in collaboration with Zain Group, the leading mobile operator in the Middle East and Africa, MBC Al Amal, The social responsibility arm of MBC Group, and supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with the aim of employing technology to provide appropriate solutions to address the problems experienced by refugees in a technical and innovative manner.
The competition saw a high level of participation from a wide range of countries and sectors, and the bulk of applications for participation came from Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. The applications were distributed well to the most important categories of the competition: basic needs, health care and education.
